The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) has strategic responsibility for the UK's nuclear legacy with the clear aim of decommissioning 20 civil public sector nuclear sites safely, securely, and cost effectively, whilst protecting the environment. The NDA owns all the sites operated by the Magnox North and Magnox South regions of Magnox Electric Ltd.

British Nuclear Fuels (BNFL) is an international nuclear energy business. Also as a Parent Body Organisation, BNFL owns all the shares in Sellafield Ltd, which manages fuel recycling & decommissioning operations at Sellafield and Capenhurst on behalf of the NDA.

Sellafield Ltd is the Site Licence Company that manages the day-to-day operations at Sellafield and Capenhurst on behalf of the NDA. Activities centre around remediation, decommissioning and clean up of the historic legacy as well as operations within the Thorp and Magnox reprocessing plants, the Sellafield MOX plant and a wide range of waste management and effluent treatment facilities. Sellafield Ltd also owns 51% of the shares in International Nuclear Services with the NDA owning the remainding shares.

The Health and Safety Commission is responsible for health and safety regulation in Great Britain. The Health and Safety Executive and local government are the enforcing authorities who work in support of the Commission.

Environment Agency

The Environment Agency is a leading public body for protecting and improving the environment in England and Wales. The EA works with nuclear sites and the Health and Safety Executive’s (HSE) Nuclear Installations Inspectorate. The EA oversees how nuclear sites in the UK dispose of their radioactive waste by granting site authorisations to the operators who run them. The Agency regularly inspects and monitors licence-holders to make sure that the standards they have set are being met.
